Hai Dear,
I've read ur comment in Mama Kembar 3 blog recently. I have a question to ask. My boy is almost 3 and dia still cant speak. Setiap perkataan yang keluar sounded so different dari apa yang dia maksudkan. I masih tak bawak dia jumpa mana2 pakar. Some one suggest me untuk hantar dia sebab takut autism. I kurang pengetahuan sikit mengenai anak2 autism ni. Setiap perkataan yang dia nak sebut dia akan buat bunyi. Contoh he will bark to refer to dog. Clicking sound refering to clock. Nak makan dia akan kata nyam2. Nak kata dia tak dengar kdg2 dia dengar kalau kita panggil but most of the time dia akan fokus dengan apa yang dia buat contoh tengok tv. Dia agak aktif tapi kurang pandai berkawan dengan rakan sebaya but maybe becoz dia jarang jumpa org and stay indoor with his grandma. Dan satu yang i perasan dia tak boleh tengok benda yang tak tutup atau terlipat. Dia akan tutup semua pintu dalam rumah termasuk pintu bilik air. Kalau dia berlari and terlihat hujung carpet terlipat dia akan berhenti an unfold it back. Even seluar yang i pakai berlipat dia akan turun kan balik. Kalau masuk bilik air penutup syampu terbukak pun dia akan tutup every single bottle. Can u give me advice on my little boy development
Trully,
Julia Ismail

Ni jawapan yang Fiki bagi....
Hi Julia,
It does sound like your son have autism, however you will need to get further confirmation through professional assessments. I could recommend you some diagnostic centre that you might be interested in if you want.
However buat sementara ni, for his language development, give him simple instructions, such as "pick up toy" or "close door". This is so it does not confuse him with long instructions yang we selalu guna, such as, "xx pergi simpan toys lepas tu tutup pintu and jangan lupa berus gigi" (and so on). And for getting him to describe barang semua, like when he barks in referring to dogs, whenever he does that, you quickly point to the dog and say, "dog? dog! that's right, the dog says woof woof", or whenever he clicks for the sign of clock, you point to clock and say, "clock!". Don't force him to repeat back your words after repeating it twice because we do not want to discourage him from speaking; we want him to speak on his own will and not only when he is forced to.
For his compulsive-like behavioural disorders such as closing the doors or fixing the folded carpets and trousers, you need to try this method called redirection and extinction. It is quite hard for me to explain here through words, however you may be able to find some good videos and descriptions of it.
Meantime, I suggest you encourage the use of English language to him. This is so in case you're interested in putting him up for an ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) or Occupational and Speech Therapy (which has proven effective in improving the development of children with autism) and most of these therapies that are conducted in Malaysia are done in English.
If you wish, I can even recommend you a few companies for where you can find those therapies, however, the ones that I know are held in Selangor or Kuala Lumpur only.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have further questions or enquiries.
All the best!!
